Test Shoot: Hannah @ Portfolio Models

I recently had the opportunity to test shoot Hannah from Portfolio Models (Nelson). Hannah, who has been modeling for 2 years is amazing to work with. She is particularly skilled with her flow-posing and in addition to her brunette coloring also has striking blue eyes. Using Auckland’s Viaduct as a setting, we were thrilled with the shots. The Viaduct has so much to offer in terms of backdrops, from monochromatic, concrete silos to the industrial containers and the numerous textured walls. I usually shoot in the studio, but was good to get out and embrace the natural diffused light and […]

Web Campaign: Rarefied

I was excited and nervous at the same time when the talented designers at Rarefied gave me the brief that they had in mind for their “Ridge” web campaign. Shoot a campaign at the Tangariro Alpine Crossing , what camera gear, what lighting equipment, what if the weather doesn’t hold up were the least of my worries. The crossing is a grueling 19.1 kms and that is no fun when you have to carry camera gear, enough water and a team of 7. We put together a mood board on Pinterest over the next week as we planned the logistics of […]

Model Muse: Brogan

Last couple of months I have been busy shooting for clients and the creative side to photography had taken a back seat. Don’t get me wrong, shooting jobs is fun but not always as creative as you want it to be. Photographers/Artist often hit the creative block and get trapped by their own thinking. It was a few weeks ago I came across a few old copies of the Vogue magazine and was in awe with the photographs by Patrick Demarchelier. I instantly knew I had to shoot some creative black and white photographs and have the really harsh/contrast light on […]

Headshot Perfection

How to take a good headshot: In the world where everything is digital, casting directors/clients/ agents and photographers flick headshots through every second to one another. Taking a good headshot seems simple; grab a camera, a model and shoot on a blank wall. However, have noticed you just don’t seem to be successful in those castings always getting cut. So you are sitting there wondering what doesn’t my headshot have that makes it stand out? Well here’s a few handle tips I have picked up along the way. What is a headshot? A head shot if a quick snap taken […]
